We welcome new members and offer a range of different membership levels for those interested in joining our industry leading institution. Becoming a Member of the British Institute of Funeral Directors

Full membership of the BIFD is available to individuals who have obtained:

Licence to Practice

Our Licence to Practice is issued on an annual basis to BIFD Members who have dedicated themselves to 12 hours of approved Continuous Professional Development throughout each year. This scheme was developed to encourage best practice within the funeral profession. The licence scheme alongside our ‘Look for the Licence’ logo aims to reassure the public that they will receive a professional standard of service. Licence holders are also promoted through the BIFD.

Additional Membership Levels

In addition to our full membership and Licence to Practice, we offer a range of additional membership levels. Details of each type of membership are outlined below. If you require any further information on the types of membership on offer, please contact us.

Associate Membership

Associate Membership is available to individuals engaged in an occupation relating to or supporting funeral directing. This membership is also awarded to those with funeral directing qualifications that are not equivalent to the Diploma level (at the discretion of the Board of Directors).

Retired Membership (Voting)

Available to any Full Member or Fellow that has been a full member for three years or more, is no longer in full-time employment but wishes to retain their rights to vote.

Retired Membership (Non-Voting)

Non-Voting – Available to any Full Member or Fellow that has been a full member for three years or more, is no longer working within the profession and wishes to give up their right to vote.
