David Gresty
My name is David Gresty; I have been in the funeral service full time for 17 years. My family business was started by my grandfather in the late 1930s. I was helping out from an early age, especially after my grandfather took ill and passed away in 1988.

As soon as I had a driving licence at 17, I was driving hearses, limousines and the removal vehicles, in between studying for A Levels and then university.

I have been an active member of The North West Division of the British Institute of Embalmers (BIE) for over 12 years; I have been Chairman twice and held the secretary

position for 4 years. I am in Region J of the British Institute of Funeral Directors (BIFD) and I have almost completed 5 years as Chairman.

I became involved nationally in the BIFD at two directors meetings during 2011 in my role as Deputy Regional Director. At the first meeting, I discovered the institute was in need of a new editor for the Journal. Lesley Kirk, Clive's (the National President - as if he needs an introduction) wife, had offered to take over the role if no one else came forward. I do not know why but my arm suddenly went in the air and my mouth involuntarily started speaking “If no one else is coming forward I would like to help Lesley with the job for 12 months”.

What had I done? Anyway, two months into the job, the team is working well and we seem to be learning the ropes. It is my aim to help in the production of the best trade magazine for members and students that we can and do justice to the Institute in these times of change, particularly in our educational system ... ...
