Contributions
The editors of the Journal are happy to acknowledge that the value of contributors cannot be over-emphasised. With this in mind and to help to maintain the high visual standard of the publication, here are a few answers to questions that have been posed recently.
Member’s Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Can I send photos to you via email?
A: Photographs sent in via email are always acceptable; however there is a huge distinction between the final quality of an image produced on a computer screen and one destined for publication.
Q: Do you specify a minimum size for digital photos?
A: Ideally the photo image should be at the minimum of 500k (0.5mb).
Q: The shot looks OK on the screen, but it is a bit small. I know that it is easier to send small photos by email – is this OK?
A: The chances are it will not be suitable for publication. Some applications such as Microsoft Outlook offer the option to resize when sending by email. The chances are your original photo will be the right size, so send it at a high resolution. (Typically at least 300dpi as a Jpeg).
Q: If the photo I have sent in is out of focus, can it be manipulated into focus by the design team?
A: No sorry, we can get rid of red-eye though.
Q: What should I look out for if taking shots outside?
A: Reflections of yourself in the window of a shop or reflections against very shiny (as they tend to be) hearses or limousines, can cause problems. Always take the photo at an angle, rather than directly in front.
Q: What should I look for when taking shots inside?
A: Again reflections. Mirrors or paintings behind the subject, or the subject standing in front of a projector screen can often lead to problems. Also wall lights will steal all of the light in the shot making the subjects look dark.
Q: I don’t have a digital camera, can I send in traditional paper photographs.
A: Certainly, if you provide a SAE, we will ensure that they are returned following use.
